Movie Review : Inglourious Basterds

I B poster

Last night I went to see Inglorious Basterds, the latest movie by Quinton Tarantino who also made Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies. I am a big fan of Tarantino, so was pleased that the movie was still showing when I got back from my travels. Here’s the run down:

 Plot

This is so difficult to summarize. The movie is set in the 2nd World War and is marketed as Brad Pitt organizing a group of American soldiers to kill as many Nazis as possible. Yes this is true, but this (the killing) only counts for a small part of the movie.

The thing about this movie is that it’s like a novel, where characters are introduced at various stages and all of which add something to the plot. Although Brad Pitt is the lead actor he is really only on screen for a combined time of 1/2 hour of the 2 1/2 hour movie.  The other members of the Inglorious Basterds gang are on screen for even less.

There are however other major strands of the plot which involve a French woman who owns a cinema (who a German war hero falls for), a German actress who is a spy for the Americans and British and also quite possibly one the most sinister and clever villains ever seen in a movie – A Nazi Colonel. Read on for my verdict on the movie !

5 Things That Tell You You’re On A Flight to Kuwait

Hi Everyone. Just arrived this morning from Italy (via London). As you’ve probably guessed I’ve been away these last couple of weeks.   Sorry about the lack of posts, but have no fear – Normal service is resumed !!

Will be posting about some of the places I visited during my travels but I thought I would start off with a list. Having been lucky to travel, I’ve spotted a few things which always tell me that..yup….I’m on the BA flight to Kuwait (economy class).

Here are the top five things that I always notice :

1. You arrive to your seat and find that the overhead lockers are completely full and there is no where to put your hand luggage. You try the locker on the other side of your aisle and that’s full. You go down one locker..full. You go up one locker..full. And the weird thing is that there is not even anyone in sitting in your row of seats ! Read on for the rest of the Top 5

What A Shot !

All the tennis talk this week has obviously been about Serena Williams threatening line judges and officials at the US Open, but the real talk should have been about one of the best ever shots. Roger Federer, who has to be the greatest ever tennis player, plays an incredible shot in the final game of his semi final win against Novak Djokovic. Check it out !

Zzzzzzzz

These last a couple of days I’ve had a bit of a cold and usually some Panadol and a good night’s sleep does the trick. During Ramadan though, I (like most of us) have been losing out on sleep time during the night. I’ve been going to bed really late and having to get up for work in the morning.

So the other night I decided to not only go to bed a bit earlier but wanted to make sure I had a good deep sleep. I went with a recommendation from my brother and sister. Read the rest of this post

This Is It – The Michael Jackson Movie Trailer

Here’s the official trailer for the movie made from footage of Michael Jackson’s rehearsals for the concert tour that he was preparing before he died.

To be honest when I first heard they were going to make such a movie I wondered if it would really do one of the world’s greatest ever entertainers justice. Having seen the trailer, it left me with one big impression. I really wish I had the chance to see Michael Jackson live in concert. Check it out !

Movie Review : District 9

district-9-poster-copy

A few weeks ago I wrote about the movie District 9 and this weekend I got the chance to actually watch it. The first thing I have to say about the movie is that if you don’t like movies about aliens, give this movie a miss. Oh and if you’re expecting another Independence Day, where humans kick alien ass, then you will also be disappointed. District 9 is a very different and original take on the ‘aliens on earth’ genre.

Plot

The movie is set in South Africa where 20 years before, an alien space ship breaks down and is suspended in the sky above the country. The authorities decide to find out what’s up and they discover that its full of aliens. So they decide to set aside a special camp in the country (which is really a slum) for all of them to live. After 20 years there are almost 2 million of these aliens or “prawns” as they call them (gives you an idea what they look like).  Problems start when the government hires a private contractor to relocate the prawns to another camp outside the city. That’s when the story really develops… Read on to see my verdict and score

Cool McDonald’s Poster Ads

macfries ad

I don’t normally eat fast food but when I do its really tough for me to go anywhere other than McDonald’s, especially here in Kuwait. For me its their fantastic french fries that hook me in. The food also generally feels lighter and less greasy than the other fast food restaurants.

McDonald’s also comes out on top in my eyes when it comes to clever advertising. The website The Design Inspiration has listed 40 of the most original McDonald’s ads.

Oh and look out for the ‘Make a Deal’ posters – They seem to have a good idea of what parents sometimes need to do, to keep their kids happy LOL !

The Best Baqlawa in Kuwait ?

  Mr. Baker Baqlawa

With Ramadan here, its time for all of us to enjoy all the great sweet that’s available here in Kuwait. For me, Ramadan is the only time I eat baqlawa (even though its available throughout the year). I asked someone in the office recently where I could get really good baqlawa and they told me Mr. Baker. This actually surprised me, because for me Mr. Baker has always been about their cakes and desserts. Read on to see what’s inside the box !

This Will Amaze You !

I received this via an email this morning. It one of the coolest things ever. I’ve tried it 3 times and each time it comes up with the correct answer.  I have no idea how it does it. Check it out.

Click on the link below and follow carefully the onscreen instructions. There is sound which takes time to load up but you don’t really need it. Its just a woman’s voice reading out the instructions that are on the screen. Enjoy !

Movie Review : Bruno

bruno-poster-copy

I finally managed to get hold of a good copy of Bruno, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen who played Borat and Ali G. I had a feeling this movie wouldn’t be worth watching here in the cinema. And I was right ! Actually it will never, ever open here in the cinema.  There are a few scenes that are beyond rude. The movie is an Adult comedy and some scenes are definitely not for anyone who is easily offended. Let’s put it this way. If you felt uncomfortable watching Borat, you will probably be shocked by a couple of the scenes in Bruno.

Plot

Bruno is an outrageously gay Austrian fashion reporter who is desperate to make it big in Hollywood and comes up with crazy ideas in order to become a superstar. The movie is shot in a similar fake documentary reality style as Borat, with real people (some famous) who have no idea that Bruno is being played by an actor.
