Movie Review : Angels & Demons

Angels & Demons is based on the book by Dan Brown which was written before The Da Vinci Code. Of the main characters from Da Vinci Code only Tom Hanks as Professor Langdon is back and thank goodness he got rid of that stupid haircut.

I have to say my expectations going into the movie were quite low because I didn’t really like the Da Vinci Code which I thought was boring, had bad acting and no sense of urgency. Plus having the symbols float around to show how the clues fit together was such a silly touch. With Angels & Demons, I read a couple of critic scores beforehand and they were pretty low (I avoid reading reviews before going to a movie but I do look at how many stars are given).

The movie is a thriller/mystery set in Rome and the Vatican. Don’t want to give anything away but the movie is a bit like the TV show 24 mixed with Seven.

What a good movie. The suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat and the fact that clues are found in actual inscriptions of some of the famous historical sites in Rome is really cool. Tom Hanks is so much better in this movie, not the wooden acting from Da Vinci Code. Good acting from the supporting cast too. The mystery also plays out well and does keep you guessing (even though you’ll have your suspicions early on !). Obviously Dan Brown did a lot of research for the book so you do learn quite a lot about how the Vatican works. Its never boring though and just adds to the enjoyment.  The pace of the movie doesn’t let up so there really isn’t a dull moment.

I cannot understand the negative critic reviews Angels & Demons has received. This movie is so much better than Da Vinci Code. The movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long and the time just flies by. I recommend seeing it here in the cinema. There are only a couple of scenes cut, but you don’t really notice.

No you don’t really need to watch Da Vinci Code first. Just know that the controversial theory discussed in Da Vinci Code by Langdon has upset many in the Vatican.
