Movie Review : Star Trek

The summer blockbuster movie season seems to start earlier every year. Star Trek kicks off this summer and it doesn’t disappoint. Now before I go any further I’ve watched the 60s TV show and the movies starring William Shatner, so I have a bit of background to the characters. This movie is a relaunch of the original franchise so in a way its nice to know what the characters were originally like but it really isn’t necessary to enjoy the movie. That’s because they have all have slightly different personalities…I would even go as far as saying far more interesting than the one dimensional characters from the original movies. Its sort of a prequel as you learn about how the main characters (Spock and Kirk) grew up and how the whole crew of the Starship Enterprise meets up.

Of course Sci fans will enjoy this movie more than others but it still has more than enough to keep the average movie goer entertained. Even though there is less action than I thought there are good special effects and the movie was a lot of fun. Chris Pine, who plays the now wise cracking rebel Captain Kirk, was the pick of some really good performances. Simon Pegg from Shaun of  The Dead comes in at the right time to give the movie a nice comic lift too.  The plot is clever and well thought out although it does get a bit confusing when the talk is of people visiting from the future and black holes. But I guess that’s basic Sci-Fi stuff for most people.

However my gut feeling on leaving the cinema was that Star Trek was a bit like the first X-men movie. Very good movie, but I cannot wait to see the sequel. So that’s the thing with Star Trek, as good as it is, you get the feeling that its just laying down the foundation so that it can kick off an action packed sequel (which I am already looking forward to seeing). Even the villain is just there to help explain the story rather than be the focus.  This is not a criticism because the makers have rightly decided to reestablish Star Trek properly which means explaining the characters and giving them time to develop. They’ve avoided the temptation to cram too much into only two hours.

Overall this is definitely one cool movie to catch in the cinema (there is only one very minor scene cut here in Kuwait ) but expect to be left wanting more.

I can’t wait to see this movie. I loved watching Star Trek as a television series.

I also think this will be the start of many more Star Trek movies to come!!

It just came out here so we will have to wait till the hype dies down. By the way I don’t normally read movie reviews on fear the critic will give away spoilers. I have to say your movie review was great and didnt give away anything!

Thanks for the feedback 2flowers! I make an effort to reveal as little as possible about the plot as I’ve also been stung by reading reviews which reveal too much. So I spend more time on what I actually thought about the movie.
