Movie Review : State of Play

stateplay

Went to see State of Play a few days ago here in the cinema after reading some very good reviews about the movie. Actually it was a toss up between this and Wolverine and I felt like watching a movie which challenged my brain a bit.

The movie definitely requires you to think as Russell Crowe, who plays a journalist, tries to piece together a mysterious death. The plot has a conspiracy/political theme as it revolves around a US politician played by Ben Affleck (who is making a bit of comeback now it seems).

There is hardly any action in the movie and yet the 2 hours does seem to pass by pretty quickly, due to the combination of good acting, snappy dialogue and the fact that the new clues are constantly revealed like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle.  There are a few neat plot twists and all the performances are excellent with Russel Crowe for once not really dominating the movie. The problem is you get the feeling you’ve seen this all before. Its not that original.

If you like movies about the murky world of politics and special interest groups this is a movie you’ll enjoy. For most people however it will feel entertaining but by the next day you’ll have forgotten about it. I would say its definitely worth watching on DVD but probably not worth a special trip to the cinema.

BTW whatever you do make sure you catch the very beginning of the movie otherwise it will take a while to figure out what’s going on !

Its worth watching if there’s nothing else on at the cinema that catches your eye. Its entertaining but nothing special.
