Two Movies Worth Catching
The first Cinemagic event I attended was a documentary called Man on Wire. An amazing true story about how in the 70s Frenchman Philippe Petit managed to do a tightrope walk between the Twin Towers in New York. I never knew about this but apparently it was a huge thing at the time. The entertaining interviews with the actual people involved are interspersed with re-enactments shot in 70s style B/W and real footage from the time. It keeps your attention throughout as you can only marvel at the incredibile level of detailed planning and sheer fearlessness of Philippe. If ever there was a true case of genius mixed with madness, then it has to be Philippe Petit. Great documentary.

The other Cinemagic event I attended was the screening of the Italian movie Gomorra. This is a movie I had been dying to see ever since I heard that the writer was in hiding after revealing the true Camorra life (that’s not meant to be a joke by the way !). Camorra is the Naples Mafia. I love mafia movies and TV shows in general but Gomorra is no Goodfellas. This is gritty stuff, shot in reality style cinematography which further adds to the realism. Some of the actors are real life criminals which comes as no surprise as you get the feeling that they are just being themselves !
The movie is very well made with good acting but its difficult to enjoy. What you are watching is an accurate depiction of how a brutal organised criminal system works and you will be shocked about how they make their money. Its a powerful movie but watch it to be informed more than entertained.
